OLYMPIC SALUTE

Most people can at best barely imagine what it takes to become an Olympic athlete. Words like talent, grit, training, adversity and courage come to mind.   At the Boston Globe Ski & Snowboard Expo, Nov. 19-22, the Olympic story will unfold in the athletes’ own words.

Highlighting this year’s Expo is an array of Olympians on hand to salute those who have competed at the top of the game and the US athletes who are headed for the 2010 Winter Olympics at Whistler, British Columbia in February.

For showgoers and the media, this is a rare opportunity to hear the Olympic story unedited and in person.  The Olympic Salute will also showcase the names and faces to watch at this winter’s Games.  With the U.S. ski and snowboard teams poised to bring home the hardware in most events, this up-close-and-personal story of the Olympics holds special meaning this year.  Their inspirational tales will reveal both what it takes to get to the top, and what later comes from all  that hard work, personal dedication and sheer love of a sport.  For the Boston Globe Ski & Snowboard Expo audiences, this is a unique inside look at the Olympics and their charismatic stars, and a sure bet to provide a fitting kick-off to both the upcoming ski and snowboarding season and an inside track on who to look for at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in February. These athletes harbor a special lexicon for success.

Though the roster is not yet complete,it is expected to be a glittering line-up of Olympic stars including:

  • Donna Weinbrecht, 1992 Olympic moguls skiing gold medalist, winner of 46 World Cup events (most ever by an American skier in any discipline) and U.S. Ski Hall of Famer.

  • Doug Lewis, 1985 World Championship bronze medalist downhiller, two-time Olympian, two-time national champion, TV host and U.S. Ski Hall of Famer.

  • Kris "Fuzz" Feddersen, three-time Olympic freestyle skier who also coached the 1998 U.S. Olympic freestyle team to two gold medals.

  • Ross Powers, 2002 Olympic gold medalist in the snowboarding half-pipe and two-time Olympian, will be signing posters at the Okemo (VT) and Sunapee (NH) exhibits at the Expo.  His unique story has him aiming for the 2010 Games in a new Olympic sport, boarder-cross.  Now married and with two small children, Ross’s Olympic comeback is a great story in the making.

  • Tommy Moe is a double Olympic medal winner, a downhill gold and super G silver at the 1994 Games in Lillehammer, Norway.  Now Special Ambassador at Jackson Hole, Wyo., Moe, like the others who will be at the Expo, has tranferred his competitive successes into a career in the sport he so loves.
